The SME Deal Circular Timber Chain has been officially awarded. Within this collaboration, governments, housing corporations, construction companies, demolition companies, producers and other chain partners are working together to create a regional wood chain in which wood released from demolition and renovation projects is given a second life in new construction projects.

The ambition is clear: high-quality reuse of wood must be the norm by 2030.

At present, much usable wood still disappears into the incinerator, while it could be reused in, for example, window frames, stairs or cladding. In doing so, the chain not only contributes to CO₂ reduction, but also to a future-proof construction sector and new economic opportunities for the region.

The MKB-Deal is a collaboration between, among others, Province of South Holland, Municipality of Gouda, Municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, EDBA, NBVT, Green Change and Sloopcheck. In addition, a growing network of municipalities, housing corporations, contractors, demolishers and producers from the Green Heart is joining.

In the coming years, the main focus will be on doing and learning in practice. Within the deal, concrete demolition and construction projects will be supervised in which wood and other building materials are actually harvested and reused. The goal is to realize at least seven demolition projects and four construction projects in which reuse is central by 2028.

Projects participating in the SME Deal will receive support from Green Change and Demolition Check, for example, in demolition inventories, circular procurement, design for reuse and insight into carbon savings and impact.

Call: contribute projects

To really get the circular wood chain going in the region, the partners are now looking for new projects. Municipalities, housing corporations, developers, contractors and other clients are invited to propose demolition, renovation and construction projects in which wood reuse is promising.

Think of renovation projects that release wooden window frames or doors, the demolition of homes, schools or social real estate, or new construction projects that allow for circular materials and sustainable choices.

Interested?

Organizations with a suitable project or questions about opportunities should contact:

Thirza Monster
thirza@greenchange.nl

The Green Heart takes an important step toward circular construction.
